Site Changes

On 1 November 2010 the Office of the Privacy Commissioner was integrated into the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC). An interim website for the OAIC is available at www.oaic.gov.au. This site (privacy.gov.au), which only contains information related to the OAIC's privacy function, will be maintained until a combined site is established.

Personal Property Securities Register

The Personal Property Securities Act 2009 (Cth) (PPS Act) established a single, national, online Personal Property Securities Register (PPS Register). The PPS Register allows lenders and businesses to register their security interests over personal property

Persons can search the PPS Register for limited purposes, including to find out if a security interest is registered over personal property

The PPS Act has mechanisms in place which protect the privacy of individuals who have personal information on the PPS Register

If you consider that a person has mishandled your personal information on the PPS Register, you can complain to the OAIC. Generally, before you make a complaint to the OAIC, you need to write to the person first to try to resolve the problem directly.
